10. Davido – A Better Time
Energetic singer, Davido dropped what could pass as the collaborative album that has come out of Africa. Featuring the world music heavy weights like NAS, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, in addition to American music front-liners Yung Thug, Lil Baby and Hitboy. Davido delivered top tunes that can be easily captured by listeners word for word. Though it couldn’t live up to the hype/expectations despite the A-list features, A Better Time flew high on chart tables both home and abroad, the most notable of all is gaining OBO his first ever BB200, where he positioned at 170.
9. Oxlade – Oxygene
Oxlade’s delivered what would pass as the right blend of AfroPop groove and soothing vocals that’s becoming rare in the Nigerian music stage. It’s a body of work that tends to set you for a ride of proper Afrobeats execution; vocals, production, state of art. Every factor the word ‘Talent’ encompasses, that is what Oxlade has been able to show us on this project. Gathering millions of streams across all platforms and also gaining a recognition from global star, Drake.
8. Tiwa Savage – Celia
Self acclaimed African bad girl, Tiwa Savage delivered a soothing body of work that proves she’s one of the best in Nigeria and across Africa. Tiwa excelled at the intersection of Afrobeats and pop, but on Celia, her third studio album, she invents a new sound. Combining the unmistakable vibrance of Afrobeats with masterful vocal runs, instrumentation, harmonies, and intentional lyrics, she gives a nod to that soulful sound of the nineties and noughties which defined millennials’ many firsts – dates, loves, and heartbreaks. Celia gained huge recognition from international magazines and gained massive airplay globally, not talking less of the millions of streams it accumulated and is still accumulating.
7. Tems – For The Broken Ears
After the release of Try Me, Tems was never in doubt of putting out good music. Her E.P perfects how good she is and can possibly be. The Alt new lady’s E.P is still charting high in countries like the UK and South Africa. Gaining world recognitions from both international artists and fans. Songs like Damages and Ice T has gained massive airplay both home and abroad. Perfecting her 2020 was the prowess was the chemistry she did with Wizkid on “Essence” via his Made In Lagos album. Not acting new in the music game, Tems has proven she has ther mastery and class.
6. Fireboy DML – Apollo
Encrypted with soul loving songs, Fireboy once again shows he has music comfortably resting on his palm. Often regarded as the next big thing off Nigerian music market, Fireboy rendered songs that won’t easily get erased. “Champion and Spells ft Wande Coal” are major highlights from the album. Pulled millions of streams within the first hours of it’s release.
5. Chike – Boo of the Booless
A perfect definition of what is called a body of work. Chike’s Boo of the Booless has zero misses with each song preparing you for the next. Just as the title entails, the album perfects itself for singles who are not mingling while creating perfect love environment for couples. A perfect story filled tunes, though not getting the recognition it deserves, Boo of the Booless has shown that Chike is a pro in rendering emotions filled songs, dishing out music’s which would make him pass as the male ‘Celine Dion.’
4. Olamide – Carpe Diem
Olamide activated another unsung level with this body of work. Established proofs that he makes sounds that can be appreciated globally as much as it is appreciated locally. Carpe Diem stood tall in charts and streams since it’s release date, making it arguably the highest charting album from the rapper.
3. Omah Lay – Get Layd
One who should be referred to as a new school artist, deferred his newbie nature and went on to achieve what lots of veteran artists are yet to achieve in his first year in the music house. Omah Lay embedded a-list musics, like Ye Ye, Bad Influence, Damn etc in his E.P capturing the Nigerian/African audience and the international audience as well. This E.P unbelievably gained more streams that some albums from artist who are already household names in the industry. Omah Lay who is never reluctant with his word plays, within months broke into American music industry, gaining a feature with 6lack. He released another chart topping E.P which is a worthy top 10, titled, What Have We Done. Also embedded with hot tunes like Godly and Can’t Relate.
2. Burna Boy – Twice As Tall
After blessing our ears and perfecting his status as the African Giant, Burna Boy gave us yet another undisputed album which in no time gained him his second Grammy nominee as a solo artist. Being a conscious human, Burna rendered his fans with loads of conscious music like Monster You Made, Real Life etc. Going number No.1 in 32 countries after it’s release shows the amount of influence Burna’s music has on the global scene.
1. Wizkid – Made In Lagos
Wizkid on this, simply turned the most anticipated album from Nigeria, the most appreciated. The Young Don revealed he has mastered his craft and evolved. Spicing up Afrobeats with lots of many other music genres to create catchy magical tunes that captures both local and foreign audience, making Afrobeats appreciates more in the Global Music Market (both in numbers of listeners and in charts). Unarguably the Nigerian album released in 2020 with the highest replay value. Each featured artist fits in on every song they were featured, from Burna Boy to Terri. Made in Lagos broke, equaled and is still creating many records in the music industry within a very short period. A notable mention is charting No.1 in 7 countries on Apple Music after 10 weeks of release. With this, Wizkid perfects his legendary status in the Nigerian music industry.
